Michelle Pfeiffer is forty eight years old. She’s probably hit (went past??) menopause, and is in that stage in every woman’s life when she starts to wake up to crow’s feet and wrinkles, then decides to go back to bed. A strand of gray hair would make her want to never wake up again. This holds true for a lot of women, and I believe it happens more often to those Hollywood stars who have made a living out of the way they look. With Michelle Pfeiffer, I expected everything another Janice Dickenson episode – weekly botox, boob jobs galore, rhinoplasty, and basically every kind of surgery to have the appearance of someone two decades younger

I was delightfully surprised to hear that Michelle, one of my favorite Hollywood actresses, has never had anything done. Ever. Everything about her is as real as a newborn baby’s body, and she is actually proud to have that small breasted body that she’s had for almost half a century. Pfeiffer admits that she’s had countless offers from plastic surgeons since the beginning of her career, but always gave a polite “no”. In fact, when a woman approached her in the street quite recently and literally thanked her for having small breasts, she was ecstatic. It makes her feel really good that her natural beauty is accepted and applauded by her fans. She loves her “imperfect” body, and wants to keep things natural by staying fit and firm with yoga classes and working out. I love her so much more now!

Celebrities are always fun to talk about – what they’re wearing, where they hang out, who they hang out with…knowing about all these little things about celebrities and their lifestyles somehow make a person feel that he or she is a part of their world, even for that short snippet in time when E! News was on and celebrities were being followed around. It gives people a glimpse into these luxurious lives of extravagance and beauty. The glitz and the glamour never loses its appeal to the masses – or even to the middle class individuals.

However, flicking through the Entertainment channel, TMZ and all these other Hollywood channels centered on the gossip and scandals of the rich and the famous nowadays, I’ve noticed that they have gone from informative to cruel. Journalists seem to have forgotten that these stars are people too, and they are more prone to be tempted to alcoholism, addictions and substance abuse. Instead of helping them out for the entertainment they have done onstage, they seem to prey on the weaknesses of these stars and make the smallest off-stage, real life mistakes sources of entertainment as well. It’s easy to talk about someone whose shoes you’ve never tried on – maybe they should, for a day.

If I were a celebrity who earned a gazillion dollars for just smiling and waving, I would eat ribs for breakfast, lobster for lunch and yummy, juicy steak every single day for the rest of my life. Heck, I’d probably even try to pass a law about the complete eradication of vegetables in the menu! Yes, I may be a man-hater but I am a meat-lover. It completely freaks me out when others do not share the same…taste. Not only are there people in the world who refuse to eat meat, there are actually celebrities who are vegetarian!! Gosh.

Some of the shining stars who got nominated for “Sexiest Vegetarian of the Year” award by PETA or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals include Academy Award Winner Joaquin Phoenix, Heroes heartthrob Milo Ventimiglia, Veronica Mars sweetheart Kristen Bell, and the brown-eyed Jared Leto. However, the award went to Carrie Underwood (female) and Tonight Show band leader Kevin Eubanks (male) at the end of the long election process. This is Carrie Underwood’s second year in a row to carry the title, and this hit country singer admits to being a vegetarian since she was thirteen years old. She says, “I don’t like to watch commercials where they have meat, or people eating meat. It weirds me out.” Err okay. What weird me out is that meat weirds her out! How can anyone hate meat??

On the rare occasions that my normally-cheerful best friend would find herself in a tough situation where she drowns in depression, she would literally disappear from the face of the earth for a day or two or sometimes for even a whole month depending on how horrible the predicament is. She’d tell me that she was doing some “soul searching” and I’d laugh it off, dismissing her practice as absurdity. I am the type of person who “drinks to drown my sorrows”, so going to some faraway land with no traces of civilization was just not on my be-happy list.

Recently though, I hit a really hard rock along the road that is my life, I tried silencing it but it was too big. It was so hard that no amount of alcohol could drown those damn sorrows, and I decided I needed to do something else. I went online and booked my flights to a famous beach getaway, leaving home without my cellphone, laptop or any sort of connection to the world. It was the most rejuvenating experience of self-discovery I have ever had. When you’re all alone, you have no one to talk to but yourself – and boy, will you find out a lot of things. I was able to answer all those rhetorical questions about my life and figure out how to go about this rock. The next time you’re feeling blue, have a conversation with yourself – it might just surprise you.

When I would be on a wild, violent fit of rage, the people around me would always tell me that anger is one letter away from danger so I should calm down. Come to think of it, anger is always two letters away from the word “manager” and maybe this could explain why my boss is always screaming at us and creating an atmosphere of misery and madness here at work. Hmm. Well, I have since learned to control my temper issues with anger management, but it has done a lot of damage in the past – not just things, but relationships in general.

I’ve hurled a (glass!!) ketchup bottle at my sister, gotten a black eyes from fist fights, kung-fu kicked a couple of guys who pissed me off, and slammed the door to my bedroom so many times I’m surprised our house is still standing. Until now, I’ve never made peace with these individuals. Being a child was not an excuse for being out of control, and I understand the collective decision they’ve made to not forgive me.

I guess what I’m trying to say here is that anger is indeed one letter away from danger- but it’s not only physical danger to yourself or to others, it’s also that emotional and mental turmoil that cannot be fixed by time. So the next time you feel your fists curl up and your face getting red with rage, just run to a quiet place where you can be alone – or buy a punching bag, it helps release all those violent impulses!

People are always telling others to “think before you act”, and I get this a lot being someone who throws a punch first and apologizes for it when the damage has been done. But when I ask, how long do I think? And when a situation is right in front of me and I’m dying to take action, what in the world do I think about? How can I even think properly when all that’s reverberating in my head is “throw a punch, throw a punch”? Psychologically, we are incapable of a decent though-process when the object of conflict is right before our eyes and our natural instincts replace the rational voice that tells us what’s wrong and what’s right.

A solution I’ve discovered quite recently is the “count to ten” habit. When something is stressing me out, or when my parents are giving me a lecture and I’m just dying to shout back, I close my eyes and count to ten. And I don’t mean onetwothreefourfivesixseveneightnineten! I count slowly, emphasizing each number with a deep breath. When I open my eyes, I no longer see red- everything is clear, and my temper has dissipated. Not a bad idea, huh?

We have many uses for colors in the world- not only for the serious stuff like stop lights and identification purposes, but also the fun things like crayons and fashion! In the mid-1970’s, a really smart architect from Hungary named Erno Rubik found a way to use colors in a way that is both fun and serious. He invented a toy that he called the “magic cube”, but later on took the name after its creator and is now known to the whole world as the “Rubik’s cube”, the best-selling toy in history (move over, Barbie!) that earns the fascination of kids and adults alike.
The traditional Rubik’s cube is a puzzle shaped in the form of a cube, composed of six sides, twenty-six pieces and six different colors – red, white, yellow, blue, orange and green. Each side of the cube takes on one color, and the main goal is keep rotating the sides of the cube so that in the end, each side takes one solid color. It is not only a fun toy, it’s also a math puzzle…all neatly packaged in a colorful little cube

As far as I know, there are eight main colors- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, black, white- and millions of “minor” colors, rooted from the shades of the main colors (ie gray, pink, brown, etc). Then, there’s also transparency- which isn’t really a color, but some people or stores consider it as such, like when I buy cellophane from the bookstore or tinted shades from GAP. Yes, we have millions of shades that make this world colorful – in fact, the eye can distinguish up to 10 million different shades!- but did you know that there is actually an invisible color?
Color can be seen because of the absorption and refraction of wavelengths from light, but there is one color whose wavelength is so far up the charts that it is invisible to the naked eye! This is the ultraviolet shade, which comes in rays, showers and bursts of light. This is the “UV rays” from the sun that can harm our skin, and the “UV” chips that allow us to see holograms. It’s also the “UV” ink used for those “invisible” stamps in amusement parks or night clubs. It has a whole lot of uses and disadvantages, but its most fascinating characteristic is its ability to hide in plain sight

The American flag is used around the world as t-shirt designs, stickers, or logos of establishments. People everywhere use it as some kind of decoration, but only a handful know the meaning behind this national symbol. The American flag was used in the late 18th century, when it was originally called “The Stars and Stripes”. It had no meaning then, but over the years people started to assign meanings to the shapes, lines and colors of the flag.
The 50 white stars on a navy blue backdrop at the upper-left portion of the flag are said to represent the solicitation of the 50 states that belong in the United States of America, although this became an issue that was debated over when Hawaii officially became a state, and a total of 51 states were present in the nation. The stripes, or 13 red horizontal lines on a white backdrop symbolize the 13 colonies that the country used to have. Red symbolizes valor, white shows purity and innocence, while blue stands for justice and perseverance.

Venus as a planet is known to be both the Morning Star and the Evening Star, Being the second planet from the sun, it is the sister of our home planet the Earth, although it has no moon orbiting around it unlike ours. They are both similar in size, but Venus shines brighter than any star in the night sky. Because of its brightness, one day in Venus lasts for more than one earth year!

Venus is famous as the beautiful goddess of love. She represents the woman in relationships, whether romantic, platonic or professional. She is our guide when it comes to the different levels of social interaction – our behavior, social attitude, etiquette, grace and poise. She controls our tastes in clothing (fashion sense), physical attraction, desires and our artful taste in general. This love goddess fills our beings with the need for romance, passion, sexual interaction and carnal fulfillment. She commands us to seek pleasure and guides us in our pursuit until it is finally achieved.

Venus is the planetary ruler of the Zodiac signs Libra (harmonious relationships), and Taurus (our sense of security and materialism). She is also highly viewed by Pisces (emotional sensitivity and self-sarifice).

In Greek mythology, Mercury was the messenger of the gods. He symbolises our mentality in general- our intellect as well as how we see things. Generally, it controls the way we think and the way we interact with others. As Hermes, he is the symbol for the magus, the wise adviser of the gods and also divine messenger. Interestingly enough, he was also prince of thieves!?Mercury rules over the Zodiac signs Gemini and Virgo.

This fast-moving planet is known to represent ideas, techniques and a vast wealth of knowledge, especially those that are expressed through interpersonal and broadcast communication. Mercury is the ruler of writers, research analysts, sales agents, travellers, tricky magicians, and all types of consultants that help companies attain success with their counselling. Through the leadership of Mercury in our hands, this planet also controls our dexterity, mechanical skills and the coordination of our bodily movements.

Because he was the divine messenger, Mercury is also known to govern the paths that we take in life- where we came from, where we are now, where we are going and how we can reach our ultimate life desination.

Planets have spiritual energies that allow people to keep track of their ruling planets’ power, and be cautious when it weakens. This is determined by the geometric distance between planets called aspects, which affect the energies of the planets concerned. If ever a planet has an unfavorable aspect, or be in a difficult position in the zodiac, people believe that it is afflicted, thus causing negative characteristics to surface in a person’s character. If a planet has a favorable aspect or if it is aligned with your Zodiac sign, positive effects will exhibit themselves in your character.

Unfavorable aspects are conducive to personal development if they are detected and thus initiating a change or complete eradication of one’s negative characteristics. Of course, this requires a whole lot of astrological interpretation and self-analysis. Favorable aspects, on the other hand, definitely work to one’s advatage and in fact opens up more opportunities for an individual. In any case, these aspects must be continuously monitored and viewed as a whole in order for results to be accurate.

Just like zodiac signs that give us our daily dose of luck in money and love, everyone is also believed to have a “Ruling Planet” that determines one’s general attitude or personality. This can be determined by pinpointing the planet in a person’s birth chart which is most strongly aligned on the date and time you were conceived into this world. Your Ruling Planet is said to have a stronger effect on you than your Zodiac sign, although only a few individuals know about these things, and even fewer take the time to study each planet and its movements, tabulating the results in order to determine the characteristics of a person and what he or she must change.

There are also special individuals who are descendants of the Sun (sun-ruler) or Moon (moon-ruler) – they are usually fortunate in life, and blessed with a good character. I don’t know a lot about them, but there are people who do intensive research on the strength of the planets by sign, aspect and elevation. Other planets with powerful locations must also be taken into consideration, for example when Mars intersects with Capricorn, they conjunct the Mid-Heaven and thus becomes a prime candidate for rulership, especially if the other rulers are weakly placed. Try to go to an astrology expert that you may know so that you can ask help and be informed of your Ruling Planet. Who knows, it could help you win the lottery!

My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nachos. This was the code I used back in middle school so that I could remember the planets – well, it used to be “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas”, but Pluto apparently lost its title so we got nachos instead. This code stood for the the eight planets – Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. I remember studying about them and little bits about the planets – like, Mars was the red planet, Juputer was the biggest one and Saturn had rings – but I never fully understood what a planet is. I guess my brain had a hard time comprehending the thought that there were eight “Earths” all over – I mean heck, I get goosebumps just staring into the wide open seas and thinking about what’s “out there”!

Scientists don’t really know what a planet is, or how to define it. They just know that in order to be called a planet, something has to (a) orbit around the sun and (b) have enough gravitational mass within its core so that it takes the shape of a sphere.

In the world of astrology, each planet symbolizes an aspect of a person’s character – for example, Mars represents passion and Jupiter stands for good fortune and wisdom. While NASA sees the orbiting around the sun as day and night, astrologists define them as positive and negative rulerships, their sides affecting the people rely on one of the eight planets to exhibit their core values.
